Additional Information

The prints on display in Pearl of the Snowlands are made from a collection of more than three hundred thousand woodblocks from the historic Derge Sutra Printing House in Tibet. This afternoon workshop begins with a short tour of the exhibition by guest curator Patrick Dowdey about the ancient process. Following the tour, artist Elinor Nissley will teach participants how to carve their own printing blocks, and demonstrate how to print the blocks without a press. The workshop will focus on how to turn a small block into a large image through the use of repeated patterns.

Nissley runs the letterpress and design company Krank Press, which specializes in hand-carved relief prints of Los Angeles' local history, flora and fauna. Limited to twenty participants. Cost: $20 members; $25 general (includes materials).
