Additional Information
Alighiero Boetti’s production method for his arazzi (embroideries) has been critiqued from a wide variety of perspectives, ranging from praise that he created an international community to condemnation that his methodology was exploitative. Artists Sam Durant and Liza Lou discuss the nature of conceptualization and fabrication in their own art, which range from Durant’s politically-engaged multimedia works to Lou’s ongoing collaboration with Zulu women beaders in South Africa. Alma Ruiz, guest curator of Order and Disorder: Alighiero Boetti by Afghan Women and senior curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, moderates.
