Additional Information

Writer-performer Roger Guenveur Smith’s critically acclaimed one-person show features history, poetry, catastrophe, and culture. In this riveting filmed performance he plays Rodney King, whose beating at the hands of police ignited the 1992 Los Angeles uprising.

Directed by Spike Lee and released on the 25th anniversary of the state court acquittals of the four LAPD officers who were videotaped beating King, the film explores America’s complicated relationship with race. (2017, dir. Spike Lee, 60 min.) Followed by a Q&A with Roger Guenveur Smith.

Moderated by UC Santa Barbara Professor Stephanie Batiste.

The screening and discussion is followed by a party in the Hammer's courtyard featuring Chocolate Genius, aka Marc Anthony Thompson, and a cash bar.
