Today we’re excited to announce the roll out of a new feature on Happenings. Over a year ago we added the ability to recommend events and it’s been a very popular feature on the site. People love recommending events that they find interesting.

We’re taking this one step further and displaying every event that has been recommended in Happenings all in one place. It’s a truly crowd sourced list that shows the most popular events happening around UCLA as recommended by our users. We hope you’ll use this to help you find the most interesting events happening around UCLA.

At Happenings we’re always looking for ways to improve our site. For us, it’s a continuous process that results from all the feedback we get.

Today, we’re rolling out a few minor changes to the layout of our design.

Alignment

We went and aligned our text to the left to help with the flow of readability and also grouped each event listing closer together to help them stand out more. This should allow your eyes to scan each event much easier.

Featured Events

We also made the Featured Events a little more prominent to help bring more attention to what we think are some of the most interesting things happening around UCLA.

Let us know what you think! Is there anything else you’d like to see in Happenings? You can contact us or leave a comment below.

You may have noticed an alien looking symbol in one of the speech bubbles. No, it was not a printing error, a character from space invaders, or alien hieroglyphics. It’s a QR Code!

QR Codes, which were popularized in Japan, work just like barcodes, but they can act as links to web sites. To scan a QR Code, you will need two things: a smart phone with a camera, and a QR Code reader app. There are many free QR Code reader apps available. Please visit the app store for your particular phone to download one.

Here are some free readers you can download for free:
iOS: QuickMark
Android: QuickMark
Palm WebOS: QR deCODEr
Blackberry: ScanLife Barcode Reader

Once you have an app, point your camera at the Happenings poster and scan the code.

Happy scanning!

We’re going to be performing a website update from 8-9am on Wednesday, November 3rd. Happenings.ucla.edu and the mobile site will not be accessible.

Update Notice

Part of the system update we’re performing affect event IDs. All events will be assigned new event IDs. The side effects of this update are:

-Broken or wrongly linked happenings.ucla.edu event URLs (Shared or bookmarked)
-Broken or wrongly linked http://ucla.in shortened URLs for happenings.ucla.edu events
-Missing or wrongly associated “Likes” by Facebook users
-Missing or wrongly associated Facebook comments for events

If you have bookmarked or linked to a URL before 8am Wednesday, you will need to revisit happenings.ucla.edu, find your event, and use the new URL it has been assigned. Facebook “Likes” and comments will also be associated with an older event or might be missing entirely. We apologize for the inconvenience to our visitors and event organizers. We expect these problems to persist for events entered prior to our system update and correct itself in the next few days. We encourage you to re-share, re-like and re-post comments you’ve made.

This latest system update will allow us to roll out new features on the website. We look forward to revealing those features to all of you very soon.
