Heribert Schunkert, MD Professor Cardiology and Internal Medicine Technical University München Director Cardiology German Heart Center Munich, Germany Talk Title: “Genetics of Myocardial Infarction” Before the genomic era the genetics of coronary artery disease were largely understood as a consequence of a positive family history or familial hypercholesterolemia. Over the last ten years, genomewide association studies identified hundreds of risk variants that can be grouped into networks and pathways which influence the risk of the disease. The exploration of the genetic landscape which influences the risk myocardial infarction has led to many surprising molecular targets. In this lecture I will present novel pathways that were identified to play a causal role in the precipitation of coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction. Thereby a much better resolution of the underlying mechanisms could be achieved. The lecture will provide detailed analysis on the stepwise molecular cascades which ultimately cause coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction.
