One of the undisputed hits of the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, MOUTHPIECE is a heart-wrenching and humorous journey into the female psyche. The brainchild of Amy Nostbakken and Norah Sadava, co-founders of Quote Unquote Collective, a Toronto-based multi-disciplinary performance company that actively engages with urgent social and political themes, MOUTHPIECE is a virtuosic display of physical ingenuity and vocal orchestration. MOUTHPIECE follows one woman for one day, in the wake of her mother’s death, as she tries to find her voice. Interweaving a cappella harmonies, dissonance, text and physical movement, the two performers express the inner conflict that exists within a modern woman’s head: the push and the pull, the past and the present, the progress and the regression. Ranging from tender to merciless, with uncompromising precision, MOUTHPIECE magnifies a daughter’s contemplation of her mother, and becomes a rigorous investigation of womanhood itself.
