Additional Information

Get ready for a cascade of percussion-led music.

The Music of West Africa Ensemble leads the program with African drum patterns, songs and dances. Francis Awe and Omowale Orisayomi lead the group to deliver polyphonic textures using drums, bells and rattles, while the dancers breathe life into the compositions with routines from the Yoruba tradition of Nigeria.

Then, the Afro-Cuban Ensemble keeps the beat going with Cuban music that’s derived from African musical traditions. Steven Loza directs the group with help from assistant director David Castañeda and will expose the audience to Cuban formats, like “son conjunto.” Expect to see instruments such as brass, strings, piano and bass in addition to the drums.
