Living in the slum of Katwe in Kampala, Uganda is a struggle for ten-year-old Phiona (Madina Nalwanga), her mother Nakku Harriet (Lupita Nyong’o) and the younger members of her family. Her world changes one day when she meets Robert Katende (David Oyelowo), a missionary who teaches children how to play chess. Phiona becomes fascinated with the game and soon becomes a top player under Katende’s guidance.


Meleko Mokgosi Film Series In conjunction with Bread, Butter, and Power, artist Meleko Mokgosi has selected films addressing colonialism, democracy, and liberation across the continent of Africa, themes that he explores through his large-scale episodic painting cycles.
