Additional Information

The Film and Television Archive presents, as part of their  Playtime: The 'Musical Comedies' of Miguel Gomes series,  screenings of The Face You Deserve (A Cara que Mereces), Entretanto, and Cantico das Criaturas.

"The films of Portuguese director Miguel Gomes defy categorization so when pressed to describe them, one can follow Gomes' example and make a game of it. In this case, there's only one rule: You must define the undefinable in a word. With Gomes' films, one could do worse than "utterly disarming." Which is two words and a violation, but also in perfect spirit with Gomes' deliberate disregard for the rules of the cinematic game. A former film critic-turned-filmmaker, Gomes has vaulted to the forefront of international critical attention with just two features and half a dozen shorts, each of which blur the boundaries between fiction and non-fiction, fairytales and reality, childhood and adulthood resulting in what Dennis Lim describes as "an expansive, kaleidoscopic experience." According to Gomes, they're all "musical comedies." Whatever definitions one prefers, Gomes' lo-fi, whimsical aesthetic cuts through even the most calcified cinematic cynicism with an irresistible sense of play."
