Additional Information

A group that can travel to the outer sonic limits of jazz and return to earth firmly rooted in the deep pocket of an infectious groove, the Mark Dresser Quintet features some of Southern California’s most innovative and accomplished improvisers. The bassist/bandleader’s compositions share the same traits as his own extraordinary bass playing—dynamic, rhythmically complex, sonically powerful—and always full of surprises.

“…completely fresh and innovative, yet filled with the blues at every turn. …a joyride to experience” (All About Jazz).

Nicole Mitchell, flutes. Michael Dessen, trombone.  Joshua White, piano. Michael Sarin, drums. Mark Dresser, bass.

JazzPOP, the Hammer’s “reliably excellent” (Los Angeles Times) creative jazz festival, celebrates its 12th season this summer, with three concerts featuring Southern California bass players who lead their bands from the bottom up.

Expect deep grooves, free jazz explosions, and music drawing from influences as diverse as vintage L.A. punk, acoustic blues, bebop, and Puerto Rican folk music.

Curated by San Francisco Bay Area bassist Lisa Mezzacappa.
