A Question of Silence (Netherlands, 1982) directed by Marleen Gorris. Three women—strangers to each other—spontaneously murder the male owner of a clothing store triggering an unsettling, psychological police procedural that leads a criminal psychiatrist to challenge the exclusionary, patriarchal foundations of the Dutch justice system.
Riddles of the Sphinx (UK, 1977) directed by Laura Mulvey. Mulvey and Wollen’s landmark essay film brings radical theory and radical form to bear on a political, psychoanalytical explication of female subjectivity represented by a single mother struggling with work, child-care and personal fulfillment.
