Additional Information

The Governor General of Canada, His Excellency David Johnston, looks forward to talking with UCLA students, faculty and administrators about how Canada and the United States can work together to build a fertile innovation ecosystem that promotes the “Diplomacy of Knowledge” and the value of working across disciplines and across borders.

Governor General David Johnston is The Queen’s representative in Canada and exercises the duties of head of State. Non-partisan and apolitical, he presides over the swearing-in of the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice of Canada and cabinet ministers; summons, prorogues and dissolves Parliament; delivers the speech from the Throne; grants Royal Assent to acts of Parliament.

He also receives Royal visitors and many foreign dignitaries during their visits to Canada and serves as Commander-in-Chief of Canada.

Prior to becoming Governor General of Canada in 2010, Mr. Johnston served as dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Western Ontario, Vice-Chancellor of McGill University and the President of the University of Waterloo. In 2011, the University of Waterloo officially renamed its Research and Technology Park in honour of David Johnston to recognize his contributions to the university during his 11-year tenure as president, as well as his commitment to advancing research and technology in service for the people of the community and for all Canadians.

He has served on many task forces and committees, such as the Board of Oversees of Harvard College, Administrative Board of International Association Universities, and the Government of Canada’s Sustainable Development Technology; National Task Force on High Speed Broadband Access; and the Information Highway Advisory Council just to name a few.
