Director Rouhollah Hejazi deftly probes the fault lines of marriage in The Wedlock, here presenting two couples, one younger and one older, in relation to delineate the generational tectonics at work in both. Taraneh Alidoosti stars as the estranged niece come, with her partner, to help renovate the home of her uncle and aunt and their teenage daughter.

Within Hejazi’s crucial sense of composition, each struggles against the roles, private and cultural, that they nevertheless seemed bound to play.
