'The Comfort of Strangers' (1990) Directed by Paul Schrader. The ancient, narrow streets of Venice seem to ensnare a British couple (Rupert Everett and Natasha Richardson) and offer them up to a mysterious aristocrat (Christopher Walken) with sinister designs. On vacation to fix their relationship, the couple play head games with one another until they suddenly, violently, find themselves subject to someone else’s rules. Opulent settings, a dreamy, melancholic atmosphere and a script by Harold Pinter make this one of director Paul Schrader’s most hypnotic forays into power and perversity. Skouras Pictures. PRODUCER: Angelo Rizzoli, Mario Cotone, Linda Reisman, John Thompson. DIRECTOR: Paul Schrader. Based on the novel by Ian McEWan. SCREENWRITER: Harold Pinter. CINEMATOGRAPHER: Dante Spinotti. EDITOR: Bill Pankow. CAST: Christopher Walken, Rupert Everett, Natasha Richardson, Helen Mirren, Manfredi Aliquo. 35mm, color, 107 min.
Followed by: 'Forever Mine' (1999) Directed by Paul Schrader. 'Forever Mine' revels in romantic Sirkian melodrama--with allusions to Beatrice and Dante--holding fast to its faith in perfect, true love through every wildly improbable plot twist. A diaphanous Gretchen Moll plays the trophy wife of a corrupt businessman (Ray Liotta) who is swept off her feet by the rapt attentions of Joseph Fiennes’ cabana boy while vacationing at a Miami resort. When the affair is discovered, the husband exacts revenge but only ultimately defers what was always meant to be. J&M Entertainment. PRODUCER: Damita Nikapota, Kathleen Haase, Amy J. Kaufman. SCREENWRITER: Paul Schrader. CINEMATOGRAPHER: John Bailey. EDITOR: Kristina Boden. CAST: Joseph Fiennes, Ray Liotta, Gretchen Mol, Vincent Laresca, Myk Watford. 35mm, color, 115 min.
