More about this event:
The High Noon Film Series is presented by the Fowler Museum at UCLA . June 25: Sirens of the Silver Screen—Explore early representations of mermaids and the relationship between humans and the sea at this screening of two films from the golden era of Hollywood. The program starts with La Sirene/The Mermaid (1904, 4 minutes, black and white) a fanciful short film by director Georges Méliès, and is followed by the classic Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid (1948, 89 minutes, black and white, English). July 2: Million Dollar Mermaid—Starring Esther Williams, this is the story of "the incomparable Annette Kellerman," an Australian swimming champion and water ballet artist who swims and dives her way through the show-biz ranks. July 9: The Incredible Mr. Limpet —Don Knotts starts as meek Henry Limpet, who experiences his fondest wish and is transformed into a fish. As a talking fish he assists the US Navy in hunting German submarines during World War II. July 16: The Secret of Roan Inish —A family-friendly fairy tale of Ireland's historical struggles and fantastic legends, The Secret of Roan Inish is a fable for all ages. When young Fiona learns how her ancestors came to leave the island of the seals, Roan Inish, she discovers there may be magic afoot in her family tree. July 23: Splash—Oscar winner Tom Hanks stars as workaholic Allen Bauer, who's convinced he can't fall in love, until he's rescued from a boating accident by the woman of his dreams—a mermaid named Madison (Daryl Hannah). But if the world discovers Madison's secret, it will be sink-or-swim for the duo. |
